Picture a school where children have the freedom to move about as they wish, spend time following individualized learning paths on technological devices, learning through play, and spending time reading and writing in groups and one-on-one with a teacher. The students are of a range of ages, and work together to solve problems and grow as a community of learners. The children are free to take their learning outside if they wish, and students are encouraged to take ownership of their own learning. This is the environment we seek to create for our learners at A House of Learning. If that sounds like something you want for your family, read on for specifics.
School Year Schedule
School will be held Monday - Thursday each week starting on August 18th and ending on May 21st.

Why isn't school held on Fridays?
This is to give families one day each week to learn together or to create their own learning plan. My family will spend this day at museums, parks, libraries, and other fun adventures. Some families may want to have a day to allow their children to explore activities on their own, free from structure and responsibility. Other families may want to have a day where they focus on a specific subject together. The sky's the limit! This day off every week is to allow each family the chance to connect and grow together.

When are the other school breaks?
Labor Day: Monday, September 1
Fall Break : October 13-16
Thanksgiving Break: November 24-27
Christmas Break: December 22-January 2
Martin Luther King Jr Day: Monday, January 19
Mid-Winter Break: February 16-19
Spring Break: April 6-9

Why do you take an entire week off for Fall and Thanksgiving breaks instead of just a few days like most schools?
We aren't most schools! In Miss Kim's (over 10 years of) experience as a teacher, about 6-8 weeks in to any school experience, the teachers and the students start to burn out. By taking a week off every 6 weeks or so (sometimes sooner due to holidays), we can keep the students and teachers engaged in learning and full of energy and excitement for the next project. Breaks from the learning routine are just as important as the learning routine itself.
Daily Schedule
9:30-9:45
Drop off and free play. Parents can drop off their children anytime during this window.
9:45-10:00
Class Opener - includes things like reciting the pledge of allegiance together, checking in with one another, making goals, as well as any housekeeping items that need to occur.
10:00-12:30
Core learning time: This is when the students will be working independently, one-on-one with the teacher, and in groups to work on reading, writing, and math skills. Students are encouraged to take breaks as needed to play outside, stretch, explore sensory materials, or whatever helps them to reset their brain for more learning time. Every student's schedule and routine will look a little different during this time of the day. The teacher and student will work together to create the ideal plan for each child.
12:30-2:00
Lunch and outside time (Families who wish to eat lunch with their children are welcome to take them home during this time and then bring them back for the afternoon!)
2:00-2:30
Music time - Piano practicing and lesson times for those students who choose to enroll in that option, musical play for those who who are not doing piano lessons.
2:30-3:30
Science and Projects time - This will be an opportunity for the entire class to work together to solve problems and learn about the world together.
3:30-4:00
Snack and Dismissal time - Parents can pick up their students anytime during this window. Students who stay until 4:00 will have the opportunity to watch a Generation Genius science video each day, as well as have a snack together with their classmates.
What is the homework load like?

There will be zero homework. Miss Kim always encourages parents to read with their children, but there will be no homework assignments. Reading is still encouraged because it connects families together. Children love to be read to. It helps them to feel loved, seen, and nurtured. When children feel loved, they learn. It's a beautiful natural consequence.
